The VIZIUM Science Centre in Ventspils is impressive both inside and out. So it seemed only logical that a stamp dedicated to this unique example of contemporary Latvian architecture should capture not only its exterior, but also the distinctive atmosphere and experiences at its core. But how?
The answer was a hologram — a solution never before used in Latvian philately. It allows two visual layers to occupy a single image, revealed alternately as the stamp is viewed from different angles.
The outer layer shows the building from its most striking angle; the inner layer captures the experiences within. Arrows turn it into a visual journey through the building, connecting one experience to the next.
The graphic design draws on the visual language of scientific illustration. The First Day Cover offers a glimpse of the experiences inside in an austere, futuristic style, while the First Day postmark literally demonstrates Newton’s Second Law of Motion as it strikes the envelope.
In other words — layers upon layers, just like architecture and science. :)
Concept and design.
